Why Winter Tiredness Feels Different
Most people have a working understanding of what regular tiredness feels like. Stayed up late, big day at work, slept badly, exercised hard. Normal tired. It is sharp around the edges, responds well to a decent night's sleep, and lifts cleanly once the deficit is paid back. Winter tiredness is not that. It has a different texture, a different rhythm, and — critically — it does not really lift when you sleep. You go to bed knackered, sleep for nine hours, wake up still feeling like you have not quite plugged in. Most British adults will recognise this. Almost none of them call it anything in particular.

What winter tiredness actually feels like
The texture is specific. People describe it variously as flatness, heaviness, fogginess, a low-level battery problem. Sleep helps a bit but does not fix it. Coffee helps temporarily and then drops you somewhere lower than where you started. The afternoon dip is more pronounced. The motivation to do things is reduced even when the energy might be technically available. There is a quality to it that ordinary tiredness does not have — less acute, more pervasive, harder to point at.
This is not random. The biology of winter tiredness is different from the biology of ordinary fatigue, and the differences explain the felt difference.
It is mostly not a sleep debt
This is the first thing to understand. If you are sleeping a normal amount and still feeling tired all winter, the problem is probably not your sleep duration. People often respond to winter tiredness by trying to sleep more, which sometimes helps marginally and often does not, because the underlying mechanisms are not about sleep at all.
What is going on instead is usually some combination of three things: a desynchronised circadian rhythm, low vitamin D status, and mild SAD-spectrum mood symptoms. Each contributes a different flavour of tiredness, and most British adults running winter fatigue are dealing with some of all three at once.
The circadian piece
Your body clock is calibrated by bright morning light. Researchers at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere have spent decades demonstrating that indoor lighting is, in technical terms, insufficient to keep the body clock properly entrained. In winter, when sunrise is late, mornings are dark, and most people go from bed to indoor environments without a meaningful daylight exposure, the body clock drifts.
The result is a circadian system that is putting you to sleep at the wrong times, peaking your cortisol at the wrong times, and producing energy curves that no longer match the structure of your working day. This is the source of the "never quite plugged in" quality. You are not energy-deficient. You are time-deficient — your internal clock is out of sync with the external one.
The vitamin D piece
Fatigue is the most commonly reported symptom of low vitamin D. The UK's National Diet and Nutrition Survey finds about one in five UK adults runs deficient through winter at the 25 nmol/L threshold the NHS classifies as clinically concerning. The proportion is higher in older adults, in people with darker skin tones, and in those who are mostly indoors — which, in modern Britain, is increasingly everyone.
The texture of low-vitamin-D fatigue is consistent with what people describe as winter tiredness: persistent, heavy, not really responsive to sleep, often accompanied by mild aching in muscles and joints, low mood, more colds than usual. The reason it is so easy to miss is that none of these symptoms is dramatic. They just accumulate quietly across a winter.
For this reason, the NHS recommends a 10 microgram daily vitamin D supplement for everyone over the age of one through autumn and winter. Most people do not take it. Most people are tired in February.
The mood overlay
The third layer is mild seasonal mood disruption. The Royal College of Psychiatrists notes that around 2 in every 100 UK adults meet diagnostic criteria for Seasonal Affective Disorder, with many more experiencing milder "winter blues". One of the most consistently reported symptoms of both is fatigue and a sense of lethargy that is distinct from ordinary tiredness — less about needing sleep, more about feeling unmotivated and slow-moving.
This is the layer that gives winter tiredness its characteristic flatness. You are not exhausted exactly. You are unmotivated, sluggish, less inclined to start things you would normally enjoy. This is the SAD-spectrum signature, and it overlaps so heavily with the vitamin D and circadian symptoms that the three are functionally inseparable in most people who have them.
How to tell winter tiredness from something else
Most British adults will experience some version of this through January and February. The question is when to take it more seriously.
Consider speaking to a GP if any of the following apply:
- The tiredness has lasted more than a few weeks and is not responding to better sleep, exercise or outdoor time
- It is significantly affecting your ability to work, parent, or maintain relationships
- It is accompanied by persistent low mood, hopelessness, or loss of interest in things you normally enjoy
- It is paired with unexplained physical symptoms (bone aches, muscle weakness, frequent infections)
- You have a history of depression, SAD, or other mood disorders
A GP can order a blood test for 25-hydroxyvitamin D and assess for SAD and other possible causes. Both vitamin D deficiency and SAD are recognised, treatable, and supported with established interventions.
What to actually do
For sub-clinical winter tiredness — the version most people are dealing with — the corrections are well-evidenced and small.
Get outside in the morning. Ten to twenty minutes of outdoor light, even on a grey day, is the single biggest input you can give your circadian system. This is the highest-ROI intervention available.
Supplement vitamin D from October to March. The NHS-recommended 10 micrograms daily addresses the most common single biochemical cause of winter tiredness. Effects build over weeks, not days.
Move daily, ideally outside. Walking is enough. Exercise has independent effects on mood and energy that compound with the light exposure.
Consistent sleep window. Going to bed and waking up at similar times each day helps stabilise the circadian system, which is one of the things that is drifting.
Reduce evening light, particularly screens. Bright evening light suppresses melatonin and delays sleep onset, making the next-day tiredness worse.

The point
Winter tiredness is not a normal-tired problem with a normal-tired solution. It is a specific cluster of biological and behavioural shifts — circadian drift, low vitamin D, mild seasonal mood effects — that produce a distinctive heavy, flat, sleep-resistant fatigue most British adults will recognise.
The reason it persists for so many people is that they treat it as ordinary tiredness and try to fix it with ordinary tiredness solutions (more sleep, more coffee). The interventions that actually work address the specific mechanisms involved, and they are smaller and more boring than the conversation around "energy" tends to suggest.
