The Hidden Downside of Indoor Comfort
The modern British home is one of the great unsung achievements of the species. Central heating that keeps the inside temperature within four degrees of comfortable year-round. Double-glazed sealed windows that block out wind, noise, weather, and any sense that there is a season happening outside. Carpets, soft furnishings, blackout blinds, dimmable bulbs, climate-controlled bathrooms. Lighting on every wall. Hot water on demand. None of this would have been imaginable to a Briton in 1925. All of it is now baseline.
This is on balance a triumph. Domestic life used to be cold, draughty, inconvenient and full of low-grade suffering that nobody should romanticise. The progress is real. But the comfort revolution has had quiet side-effects on the body that almost nobody set out to produce, and that almost nobody discusses.

What comfort actually optimises for
The point of comfort, as a design principle, is to remove friction. The 1920s home was full of friction: cold rooms, smoky fires, walking to fetch water, dressing in layers, drying clothes outside, opening windows for ventilation. Each piece of that friction created a small daily forcing function — a reason to move, a reason to be cold, a reason to go outdoors, a reason to be in slightly varying conditions. None of those reasons was pleasant. All of them were biologically useful in ways the people experiencing them did not know to appreciate.
When central heating arrived, the body stopped needing to manage cold. When the sealed window arrived, the body stopped experiencing slight variations in temperature and humidity. When the dishwasher and washing machine arrived, the body stopped doing several hours of incidental physical labour. When the front room became a fully lit, climate-controlled, screen-equipped entertainment space, the reasons to leave it — particularly in winter — quietly evaporated.
The body, which evolved to handle a degree of environmental variation, is now mostly experiencing constancy.
The temperature piece
Human bodies are designed to deal with thermal variation. Cold exposure activates brown fat, has metabolic effects, and may have benefits for mood and stress regulation (the basis of the recent enthusiasm for cold-water swimming and ice baths). Heat exposure has its own evidence base, particularly around cardiovascular conditioning — large studies from Finland, notably the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease study, have linked regular sauna use to better cardiovascular outcomes.
The modern home delivers neither. The thermostat is held at roughly 19°C, the body's neutral zone, year-round. This is not bad, exactly. It is just structurally unstimulating. The thermoregulatory systems that used to be exercised by the simple fact of being a person in a British winter now have very little to do.
The light piece
Indoor lighting is the most consequential single trade-off of indoor comfort. Modern bulbs — LED, fluorescent, warm bulbs in living rooms — provide enough light to function and almost no light by the standards of the human visual system's calibration. A well-lit indoor space delivers 100-500 lux. An overcast outdoor day in Britain provides around 10,000.
The downstream consequences of this are now well-established. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have spent decades demonstrating that indoor lighting is insufficient to entrain the circadian system properly. Without strong morning daylight, the body clock drifts. Sleep onset gets later. Mornings get harder. Energy curves slip out of alignment with the structure of the working day.
The longer-term piece is vitamin D. The UK's Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition notes that the body's primary source of vitamin D is skin synthesis from UVB exposure — meaning sunlight, not indoor lights. The comfortable indoor life produces, by default, a population with chronically low vitamin D, which the UK's National Diet and Nutrition Survey finds in about one in five adults through winter.
The movement piece
Comfort removed the structural reasons to move. The pre-comfort home required walking to fetch things, carrying things, doing housework that involved actual physical effort. The post-comfort home requires roughly the amount of movement needed to get from the sofa to the fridge. This is not a small change. Across a population, the absence of incidental daily movement compounds into significant deficits in cardiovascular fitness, muscle maintenance, bone density and metabolic regulation.
None of this means modern adults are inactive on principle. Plenty of people work out. The point is that the baseline — the amount of movement that happens by accident as a function of just living — has collapsed, and what people gain by deliberately exercising often does not fully replace what they have lost from the structural shift.
The social piece
Outdoor life used to be social. Pubs had gardens. Towns had high streets. Children played in front of houses. The comfortable indoor home has, almost without anyone deciding it, drawn social life inwards. People socialise online, or in indoor restaurants, or in private homes. This is not catastrophic but it is meaningfully different from the pattern of life ten thousand years of evolution would have predicted.
How to keep the comfort without losing the basics
The point of all of this is not to argue for ripping out the central heating. The argument is that the modern home, by being so good at removing environmental friction, has accidentally removed several environmental inputs the body benefits from. If you want the comfort and the biology, you need to deliberately put a few of those inputs back.
Get outside in the morning, briefly. Ten to twenty minutes of outdoor daylight, even on a grey day, gives your circadian system the bright light signal your comfortable lighting cannot. This is the single highest-ROI move.
Move outdoors on most days. Walking, ideally. The combination of outdoor light, fresh air and movement does work no individual indoor activity replicates.
Supplement vitamin D from October to March. The NHS recommendation exists specifically because comfortable indoor life cannot give you the UVB exposure your skin needs.
Don't be afraid of mild discomfort. Being a bit cold sometimes, a bit warm sometimes, a bit out of breath sometimes, is not bad. It is closer to what the body expects. Saunas and cold exposure are the high-end version of this. Walking in the rain is the everyday version.
Open the window. Genuinely, sometimes. Letting the inside temperature drop a couple of degrees does no harm and is closer to environmental normal.

The point
Indoor comfort is one of the underrated good things about modern life. It is also, when it becomes the entire environment a person experiences, biologically incomplete. The body did not evolve to live at 19°C in 300-lux lighting for fifty years. The mismatch is mostly silent, mostly low-grade, and mostly correctable with small daily moves that put back, deliberately, what the comfortable environment fails to provide by default.
You do not need to give up the central heating. You need to step outside for ten minutes a day, take your vitamin D, and let the body remember what variation feels like.
