Modern Life Wasn't Designed for Human Biology

    Almost everything about the way a modern British adult lives would be unrecognisable to a human being from any other moment in the species' history. Light without sun. Food without hunger. Conversation without presence. Movement without purpose. Heat without effort. Sleep without darkness. The infrastructure of contemporary life is, on every available axis, more comfortable, more efficient, more abundant than what came before. The only thing it is not is what the body was designed for.

    This is not a complaint. It is a description. Modern life was not built by mistake, and it is not the result of bad choices. It is the cumulative outcome of millions of individually rational decisions optimising for convenience, productivity and pleasure. The cost is that the organism doing the optimising β€” the human body β€” has, almost by accident, ended up living in conditions that bear little resemblance to the ones it was built to handle.

    The interesting bit is what that looks like, day to day, in the body of a normal person.

    The body's operating system was written for a different world

    Human biology was shaped over hundreds of thousands of years of life lived outdoors, in modest groups, with food when there was food, movement built into survival, and a sleep-wake cycle dictated entirely by the rotation of the planet. Almost every system in the body β€” circadian, endocrine, metabolic, immune, musculoskeletal β€” assumes, as a baseline, the kind of life that pattern produced. Hours in daylight. Hunger and food in alternation. Movement most days. Cold and heat in normal cycles. Darkness at night.

    The operating system did not get updated when the conditions changed. The body that wakes up in a centrally heated bedroom, eats breakfast under kitchen LEDs, sits at a desk for nine hours, drives home in the dark and watches television under bulbs is still running the version designed for the savannah. It is, in technical terms, a substantial mismatch.

    The four big shifts

    Several specific shifts compound to produce most of the felt symptoms of modern life. None of them was decided centrally. All of them have happened in the last hundred years β€” a tiny fraction of the species' history.

    1. The collapse of daylight exposure

    Modern adults spend, on average, about 90% of life indoors. This figure is consistent across the VELUX Indoor Generation studies, the US Environmental Protection Agency's National Human Activity Pattern Survey, and a range of similar datasets. The shift was gradual, driven by the combination of office work, indoor leisure, climate-controlled buildings, and the simple fact that life moved indoors as the technology to make indoor life tolerable improved.

    The downstream consequences include circadian system drift (the body clock calibrated by morning daylight is not getting its primary input), reduced vitamin D production (skin synthesis depends on UVB radiation), and the broader cluster of symptoms associated with low bright-light exposure that the Royal College of Psychiatrists describes under Seasonal Affective Disorder.

    2. The decoupling of movement and survival

    Human bodies were built around movement integrated into living. Walking to find food. Carrying water. Travelling between settlements. The amount of incidental daily activity in pre-industrial life was vastly higher than what most modern adults experience. Office work, cars, lifts, delivery apps and the screen-based leisure economy have collectively engineered most of the movement out of the day.

    The body responds to movement in ways that go beyond cardiovascular fitness β€” it influences mood, sleep, metabolic regulation, cognition and immune function. A sedentary life is not just a fitness problem; it is a whole-system mismatch with what the body expects.

    3. The disconnection from circadian cues

    The body clock evolved to be calibrated by the sun. Bright morning daylight tells the brain it is daytime. Decreasing light in the evening cues melatonin production for sleep. This system worked, with minor adjustments, for the entire history of the species until the moment we invented bright artificial light.

    Now the morning light signal is weak (most adults wake up and stay indoors) and the evening light signal is strong (bright lights and screens late into the night). Sleep researchers at Harvard Medical School have spent decades demonstrating that this combination produces measurable circadian disruption, with downstream effects on sleep quality, mood and metabolic health.

    4. The end of nutritional context

    Food in the historic human diet was contextual. Seasonal availability. Whole foods. Variety driven by what was around. Modern industrial food provides almost the opposite β€” year-round abundance, refined components, calorie density without the accompanying nutrient density, and a relentless availability that bypasses the body's natural hunger-and-satiety cues.

    This has predictable consequences for metabolic health, but also for micronutrient status. The UK's National Diet and Nutrition Survey shows widespread under-consumption of several key micronutrients β€” magnesium, vitamin D, certain B vitamins, selenium β€” in the general population. People are eating enough calories. They are eating fewer nutrients per calorie than at any point in the relevant history.

    What the mismatch produces

    The cumulative effect of these four shifts is a body running at a slightly lower idle than it was designed for. The symptoms are familiar to most modern adults:

    • Tiredness that does not lift with sleep
    • Low or flat mood, particularly in winter
    • Difficulty concentrating, brain fog
    • Poor sleep quality even with adequate duration
    • Frequent minor illnesses
    • Aches and stiffness disproportionate to actual physical exertion
    • A sense of not feeling like yourself, hard to articulate, easy to dismiss

    None of these are catastrophic. Most are easily attributed to age, stress, work, or general life. Some of them are. A surprising amount of them are downstream of the basic mismatch between the way we now live and what the body was built for.

    The fix is not to go back

    The temptation, when this argument is made, is to overcorrect β€” cabin in the woods, paleo diet, throw away the phone. This is silly. Modern life has genuine and significant benefits, and the body did not actually evolve to handle infectious disease, infant mortality or pre-industrial labour particularly well either. The aim is not to recreate the conditions of the savannah. The aim is to give the body, deliberately and in small ways, some of the inputs the modern environment fails to provide by default.

    The actual list is shorter than you might expect:

    1. Daylight in the morning. Even brief outdoor exposure first thing has a disproportionate effect on the circadian system.
    2. Daily movement, ideally outdoors. Walking is enough. The combination of light and movement does what the modern day fails to.
    3. A daily vitamin D supplement through autumn and winter. The NHS recommends 10 micrograms (400 IU) for everyone over the age of one, October through March. This addresses the single most quantifiable nutrient deficit caused by indoor life.
    4. A consistent sleep window. Going to bed and waking up at similar times, with reduced bright light in the evening, stabilises a circadian system that modern life is otherwise destabilising.
    5. Eat variety, not optimisation. No magic diet. Just variety, whole foods, vegetables, less ultra-processed stuff than the modern food environment makes default.

    That is the entire prescription. Most of it is free. Most of it is unglamorous. All of it addresses the specific mismatches modern life has produced.

    The philosophical bit

    The genuinely interesting thing about the mismatch hypothesis is how widely the explanation applies. Many of the things modern adults treat as personal problems β€” tiredness, mood, motivation, sleep, vague unwellness β€” are, on the available evidence, not really personal. They are structural. They are the predictable consequences of bodies running an older program in a new environment.

    This is, on balance, good news. Personal problems are hard to fix. Structural problems often have shockingly small structural fixes. The four shifts above produced most of the felt symptoms of modern life. A short list of small daily moves addresses most of them. The work is not in heroic intervention. It is in noticing the gap and putting back, deliberately, what the modern environment fails to give you by default.
